How old pp.dev is.
How old a domain is, to the day, from the registration date its own registry keeps.
Looking up…
Where the date comes from.
The age is counted from the registration date in the domain's registry record, the same date a WHOIS lookup shows. It is the start of the current registration, kept by the registry itself, not a guess from old web pages.
When the clock starts over.
Renewing a domain or moving it to another registrar does not change its age. If a domain expires and is deleted, though, the next person to register it gets a fresh registration date: the name may be decades old while its record is a week old. A recent date on a short, common word usually means exactly that.
What age does and does not tell you.
- An old registration says one holder has kept the name for years. It says nothing about how the site was used, or by whom, in that time.
- A very new registration on a domain that emails you or asks for payment is a reason for care: scam sites are often days old.
- Age is a fact about the registration, not a score. A new domain with a clear purpose and good content can do as well as an old one.
Questions people ask.
How do I check how old a domain is?
Type the domain. The age is counted from the registration date in the domain's registry record, read live.
Does renewing or transferring a domain reset its age?
No. Only a new registration does: if a domain expires and is deleted, the next owner starts with a fresh registration date.
Why does a well-known domain show a recent date?
It was probably deleted and registered again at some point. The registry shows the start of the current registration, not the first one ever.
Is an old domain better?
Age says how long the current owner has held the name, not how good the site is. Search engines judge a site by what it publishes and the links it earns.
