See every public sign that a domain is for sale, and how to buy it safely if it is taken.
Looking up…
The signs Hivex reads.
- Name servers of a marketplace (Atom, Afternic, Sedo, Dan.com) show a for-sale page; those of a parking service (Bodis, ParkingCrew, Above) show ads, and parked names are often for sale.
- A redirect from the homepage to a marketplace listing, such as Atom, Afternic, Sedo, HugeDomains or GoDaddy's for-sale pages.
- The words on the page: "this domain is for sale", "make an offer", "buy this domain".
- Hivex's own listings: premium names sold through AtomPay.
Buying safely.
Pay through the marketplace's checkout or an escrow service, which holds the money until the domain is in your registrar account. Check the seller's claim in the WHOIS record (registrar and dates) before you pay, and be wary of anyone who asks for a direct bank transfer.
Questions people ask.
How can I tell if a domain is for sale?
Look for public signs: name servers of a marketplace (Atom, Afternic, Sedo, Dan.com) or a parking service, a homepage that redirects to a marketplace, or a page that says make an offer. The checker reads all of them.
The domain I want is not for sale. Can I still buy it?
Often, yes. Contact the owner through the registrar's contact form (its name is in the WHOIS record) with a fair offer. Many owners never listed the name but will sell.
How do I pay for a domain safely?
Through a marketplace checkout or an escrow service that holds the money until the domain has moved to your registrar account. Never pay by direct bank transfer to a stranger.
What does a parked domain mean?
The name points to a page of ads run by a parking service. The owner earns a little from clicks, and parked names are often for sale.
Does no sign mean the owner will not sell?
No. It only means nothing public says so. Every name has a price for some owners; asking costs nothing.
