The shapes.
- kavo and velix: consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel (and one more consonant), the rhythm of names like Sora and Kanto. Easy to say, easy to spell.
- orin: vowel first, softer.
- Any 3 or 4 letters: acronyms and initials; rarer free, harder to say.
How a sample is checked.
240 names are drawn at random in the shape, leaving out triple letters and anything on Hivex's blocklist. A name with name servers in DNS is taken; up to 24 of the rest go to the registry (RDAP, or WHOIS where there is none), and only the ones it confirms are shown as free. The same link always draws the same sample.
Questions people ask.
Are there any 4-letter .com domains left?
Practically none: in Hivex's samples of four-letter .com names, every one is registered, and has been for years. Pronounceable five-letter .com names still turn up, and four-letter names on newer extensions such as .io, .app and .dev do too.
How does the finder pick names?
It draws 240 names in the shape you choose (a consonant-vowel rhythm like kavo or velix, or any letters), asks DNS about all of them, and confirms up to 24 of those without name servers with the registry. Shuffle draws a new sample.
Why does .si work differently?
The .si registry limits how often it can be asked, so the page lists names the Hivex hunter has already checked around the clock instead of asking again.
Are short domains more expensive?
Sometimes. Some registries price certain short names as premium; the registrar's checkout shows the real price before you pay.
What makes a short name good?
One you can say and spell after hearing it once: alternating consonants and vowels, no letters that look alike, and nothing that reads as a word you would rather avoid.
