Looking up…

The rules that set the date.

  • 60 days after registration: the registrar may refuse a transfer before then (ICANN Transfer Policy, I.A.3.7.5).
  • 60 days after a transfer: the same again, so a name cannot hop between registrars (I.A.3.7.6).
  • 60 days after a change of owner, unless the owner opted out before the change (I.A.3.8.5). Not visible in the public record.
  • The registry completes a transfer within 5 calendar days unless the current registrar refuses it with one of the reasons the policy allows.

Locks in the record.

  • clientTransferProhibited: the registrar's lock, on by default at many registrars. The owner switches it off in the account.
  • serverTransferProhibited: a registry lock, set on request for high-value names. Only the registrar can have it lifted.
  • redemptionPeriod or pendingDelete: the name expired and is on its way out; it must be restored before it can move.

What is changing.

ICANN's Transfer Policy Review recommends 30 days instead of 60 after registration and after a transfer, a mandatory rule rather than an optional one, and no lock after a change of owner. The GNSO Council adopted the report in March 2025 and asked for an 18-month implementation; until ICANN publishes the new policy, the 60-day rules apply.

Questions people ask.

Why can't I transfer my domain for 60 days?

ICANN's Transfer Policy lets the current registrar refuse a transfer within 60 days of the registration date or of the last transfer, which protects against theft and payment fraud. Most registrars apply it.

How do I unlock my domain for transfer?

Turn off the transfer lock (often called domain lock) in your registrar account and ask for the authorisation code. The new registrar asks for that code when you start the transfer.

How long does a domain transfer take?

For a generic extension such as .com, up to 5 days: the registry completes it unless the current registrar refuses within that time. Many go through within hours once approved.

Does a change of owner also lock the domain?

Under ICANN's current policy, changing the registrant can trigger a 60-day transfer lock unless the owner opted out before the change. It does not show in the public record, so ask your registrar.

Is the 60-day rule changing?

ICANN's Transfer Policy Review recommends 30 days after registration and after a transfer, and removing the lock after a change of owner. It takes effect only once ICANN implements it.
