See which misspellings and lookalikes of your domain are registered, which can send mail, and which you could still take first.

Looking up…

How the lookalikes are made.

  • Typing slips: a letter missing, doubled or swapped, or a neighbouring key on a QWERTY keyboard.
  • Lookalikes: rn for m, vv for w, 0 for o, 1 for l, and other vowels; all of them registrable in plain letters.
  • Bit flips: one bit wrong in a computer's memory turns a letter into another; at scale, some requests land on these names.
  • Structure: a hyphen or a dot inside the name, or the same name on another extension.

Protecting your name.

  • Register the closest few: the main other extensions and the typos people really make.
  • Set DMARC to reject on your own domain (build it with the DMARC generator), so nobody can send mail as you; lookalikes then have to use their own name.
  • Report a lookalike used for phishing to its registrar's abuse address. Trademark owners can reclaim a name through the UDRP.

Questions people ask.

What is typosquatting?

Registering a misspelling or lookalike of a known domain, such as paypa1.com, to catch people who mistype it or to send phishing mail that looks genuine.

Which lookalikes does the checker try?

Missing, doubled and swapped letters, neighbouring keys on the keyboard, lookalike characters (rn for m, 0 for o), other vowels, single-bit errors, a hyphen or a dot inside the name, and other extensions.

Which registered lookalikes are dangerous?

Those with mail servers and other name servers than yours: they can send email that looks like yours. Ones that share your name servers are most likely your own defensive registrations.

Should I register lookalikes of my domain?

The closest few, yes: the main other extensions and the most likely typos. It costs little and keeps them away from phishers. Turn on DMARC at reject to stop direct spoofing of your own domain.

What can I do about a lookalike someone else owns?

Report phishing to the registrar's abuse contact (in the WHOIS record) and the host. For trademark abuse, the UDRP process lets brand owners reclaim the name.
