Looking up…
Only clear answers.
Each platform is asked through its public API, which says plainly whether an account or package exists. Platforms that forbid automated lookups or hide behind bot checks are left out rather than guessed. A name shown as free can still be reserved or banned by the platform; try to register it to be sure.
Accounts and packages.
GitHub, GitLab, Bluesky, Mastodon, Hugging Face, Hacker News and DEV are user names. npm, PyPI and crates.io are package names: what developers type to install your code, worth claiming early for a developer product.
Questions people ask.
How does the username checker work?
It asks each platform's public API whether an account or package with that name exists, and shows free, taken, or unclear when a platform does not answer.
Why not Instagram, X, TikTok or YouTube?
Their terms forbid automated lookups, and their pages answer the same way for free and taken names. Check those in their apps.
Why does it say not allowed for some platforms?
Each platform has its own rules for names: GitHub allows letters, digits and single hyphens up to 39 characters, Hacker News 2 to 15 characters. The result shows the rule it broke.
Should my username match my domain?
It helps people find you, and it protects the brand. Check both at once with the brand name checker.
