WHOIS record of dov.app.

A domain's registration record, live from its own registry: who it is registered with, since when, until when, and what is locked.

Looking up…

WHOIS, now RDAP.

Every registry keeps a record of each domain it holds: the registrar, the dates, the status and the name servers. For decades people read it through WHOIS, a plain-text service. Registries now publish the same record through RDAP, its structured successor, and the registries of generic extensions such as .com must. This page asks the domain's own registry, found through IANA's official list, so the answer is the registry's, not a copy.

Why the owner is hidden.

Since data protection rules such as the GDPR, most registries hide the personal details of whoever holds a domain. Companies sometimes stay visible. Hivex shows at most an organisation name and a country, never a person's name, email, phone or address. To reach an owner you cannot see, write to the registrar: registrars forward messages or offer a contact form.

Reading the status.

  • Transfer prohibited (client): the usual registrar lock. It protects the name from being moved without the owner.
  • Server statuses: set by the registry itself, often a paid registry lock on valuable names.
  • Hold: the domain is taken out of DNS and does not resolve, often over an unpaid bill or a complaint.
  • Redemption period and pending delete: the domain expired; it may soon be free to register.

Some extensions have no RDAP.

A few country registries, such as .de, still offer only their own WHOIS or a web form. For those, this page points you to the registry listed in IANA's root zone database.

Questions people ask.

What is a WHOIS lookup?

It shows a domain's registration record: the registrar, when it was registered and when it expires, its status codes and name servers. This tool reads it live from the registry through RDAP, the modern replacement for WHOIS.

Why can I not see who owns a domain?

Since data protection laws such as the GDPR, registries and registrars hide the personal details of domain owners. To reach an owner, use the registrar's contact form or relay.

How do I find out if a domain is available?

If the registry has no record of a name, it is usually free to register. Confirm with a live domain check before you pay, because some names are reserved.

Is RDAP the same as WHOIS?

RDAP returns the same registration data as WHOIS, in a structured format over secure connections. Registries of generic extensions such as .com must offer it.
