Three answers from three places.

  • Network (AS): the network that routes the address today, from Team Cymru's map of the internet's routing table, built from more than 50 BGP peers and refreshed every 4 hours.
  • Organisation and block: who the address block is registered to, read over RDAP from the regional registry that holds it (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC or AFRINIC). IANA's bootstrap files say which one.
  • Hostname: the reverse DNS name, set by whoever runs the block. Many addresses have none; the reverse DNS lookup shows why.

A registration, not a location.

The country shown is where the block is registered. Team Cymru says plainly that this often differs from where an address is used, and that its data should not be used for geolocation. A cloud registered in the United States serves addresses in Europe and Asia, and a VPN exit can sit anywhere. Hivex never guesses a location.

Addresses with no owner.

Private ranges such as 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12 and 192.168.0.0/16, the shared 100.64.0.0/10 of carrier-grade NAT, loopback and the documentation ranges are set aside by IANA and never route on the internet, so the tool says what they are instead of looking them up. Registry records sometimes name a person: Hivex shows only an organisation's or a role's details.

What does an IP lookup show?

The network an address belongs to, the organisation it is registered to, the AS number that routes it, the country where the block is registered and its hostname, from the regional internet registries.

Can an IP lookup find someone's exact location?

No. Registries record who holds an address block and where it is registered, not where a device is. Location services only estimate, and are often wrong by a city or more.

How do I find who owns an IP address?

Type it in. The owner comes from the regional internet registry that manages the block (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC or AFRINIC), with its abuse contact when the registry publishes one.

Why does a website's IP belong to Cloudflare or Amazon?
