Looking up…

How a blocklist lookup works.

A blocklist (DNSBL) is published in DNS. To ask about 203.0.113.7, a mail server looks up 7.113.0.203.bl.example.net: an answer such as 127.0.0.2 means listed, "no such name" means not listed. Domain lists work the same way with the domain in front. Before trusting a list, Hivex asks it about its own test entries, so a list that has shut down or blocks the lookup shows as "could not check", never as clean.

Which address to check.

  • The address your mail is sent from matters most. Find it in the headers of a message you sent, in the first Received line added by the receiving server; the email header analyzer shows it.
  • Typing a domain checks the domain itself on domain lists, and its incoming mail servers' addresses on IP lists.
  • Mail services (Gmail, Microsoft 365, newsletter platforms) send from shared addresses they look after themselves; a listing there is theirs to fix.

Getting off a list.

  • Stop the cause first: a hacked mailbox or website form, an infected device, or a mailing list with addresses that never signed up. Otherwise the listing comes back.
  • Then open each list's page from the result. Many lists drop an address on their own after a few days without spam; others need a request.
  • A listing affects only the mail servers that use that list. Spamhaus, the one many large providers use, has its own free lookup.

Questions people ask.

How do I check if my IP or domain is blacklisted?

Type the IP address your mail is sent from, or your domain. The checker asks each blocklist live and shows which ones list it, what the listing means and where to ask for removal.

How do I get removed from a blacklist?

Find and stop the cause first: a hacked account, an infected device, a web form that sends spam, or a mailing list with addresses that never signed up. Then follow the removal steps on each list's own page; some lists drop an address on their own once the spam stops.

Why is my IP listed when I don't send spam?

Many senders can share one address at a host or mail service, a device on your network may be infected, or the address had an earlier user. Some lists also cover whole ranges of home internet addresses that should not send mail directly.

Does being on a blacklist stop my email?

Only at mail servers that use that list. A listing on a small list may change nothing, while one on a widely used list can send much of your mail to junk or get it rejected.

Why doesn't this checker show Spamhaus?

Spamhaus refuses lookups made through public DNS resolvers, which is how this checker works. Its own lookup page checks addresses and domains, and the result page links to it.
